We know you love jewelry as much as we do!
Here are some Do's and Don'ts to keep your jewelry looking as good as the first day you saw her.
Don't Do ---
Cleaning
It's a good idea to store your jewelry (especially any rings) before you start cleaning!
Most cleaners contain harsh chemicals that may cause chemical damage to metals and some gemstones.
Soap residue and grime can build up in the crevices of your ring, interfering with light refraction. Your gem, too, can get a build up of oils and soaps, making it look duller than it actually is.
Do Use ---
Ceramics & Granite With Caution
You may have noticed that ceramics are quite scratch-resistent. This is because they fall between 7 & 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Granite is between 6 & 7, hard enough to chip many gems. For reference, a Sapphire is 9!
While gemstones are strong, they aren't impervious to damage.
Knocking your gem against this material (like doing the dishes) can cause your gem to chip or pick up scratches. Be extra careful about your ring coming in contact with this material!
Don't Do ---
Gardening
Just like with cleaning house, it's a good idea to store your jewelry before you start gardening.
Have you noticed how many small crevices your ring design has? These are magnets for getting gunk like soil trapped, which is not only difficult to remove, but also dulls the shine of your gold and the light return of your gem.
Heavy tools and equipment can bend and warp settings from shanks to baskets to prongs. Gold is a very malleable metal, so wear with care!
DO ---
Regular Cleaning
Regular cleaning can be done at home - even if you don't have an ultrasonic cleaner!
All you need are:
- A soft-bristled toothbrush
- Mild dishsoap (without oils or lotions)
- Warm water
This can be done as a weekly ritual. If you're finding it's not quite enough, most jewelry stores will be able to give it an ultrasonic clean to get it looking shiny again!
Don't Use ---
Soaps, Oils, and Lotions
Your daily routine of soaps, oils, and lotions protect your skin and keep it silky smooth. But this will also coat any jewelry you have on!
The same thing that coats your skin will also coat your gem in a layer that is difficult to remove. This film will interrupt your gem's light return, making it look dull and lifeless.
Don't Do ---
Sports and Gym
While good for your mind and body, it's not good for your jewelry!
Weights, even light ones, can scratch, bend, and warp your gold. This could result in gems coming loose. With all the metal around, there's a greater risk of chipping your gem if knocked at the right angle.
Sports, especially contact sports, run the risk of a ring scratching or cutting yourself or other players. Be wary of necklaces, too, as getting hooked can break the clasp from the chain.
Stay safe and store your jewelry to prevent having to do repairs!
